What area of Florence is best to stay in?
Florence is a rather small city, making it very easy to get around by foot, especially as all of the main attractions are found in the centre and because it is relatively traffic free. Here is a summary of the main areas of the city to help you decide exactly where to stay.
- Historic centre – an apartment in the centre of Florence is a great base from which to see the city, putting you within a very close range of all of the main attractions. One of the most central points of the city is the Duomo, the beautiful and spectacular cathedral of Florence. Other attraction, such as the Piazza Signori and the Uffizi museum, are only a short distance away. As it is the centre of the city it is busy, but an excellent place to be located. You will find a lot of shopping here in this historic part of town, on the large Piazza’s and along the small and winding streets.
- San Marco – this area is to the northeast of Florence, a short walk away from the centre. The statue of David, one of the most well-known monuments in Florence, is situated in this area, right next to the Galleria dell’Accademia. It would be ideal to rent an apartment in this area as there if you are a fan of museums as there are many close by, such as the Museo Archeologico and the Museo di San Marco. There is a large student population due to many university faculties situated here, which makes it a very lively part of the city.
- Oltrarno – this zone is on the far side of the River Arno from the city centre, and its name literally means ´’beyond the Arno’. Being at this side of the river means that this is a quieter zone with fewer tourists and if you are looking for a place which has retained much of its natural flavor, renting an apartment here would be ideal. Its many attractions include the Palazzo Pitti, a renaissance palace containing many museums and surrounded by the beautiful Boboli Gardens.
- Santa Croce – this eastern district of Florence is a large area and attracts many tourists. Because of this it has many bars, restaurants and cafes, presenting you with the ideal opportunity to sit back and relax. It also contains lots of impressive architecture, and is the perfect place to wander through the numerous narrow winding streets, typical of Florence, discovering its hidden gems.
- Santa Maria Novella– renting an apartment here would put you in a great location as it is close to the main railways station and the city centre. However this does mean that it is a particularly busy and chaotic area. It is characterised by the numerous pubs, which are considered the best in the city, and it’s shopping scene, including the street of Via Tornabuoni which has many shops. One of the main attractions situated here is the Santa Maria Novella church, with frescos from the Gothic and early Renaissance period, located on the central piazza.
